Cracked ABS Waste Line Repair: What We Found in a Snohomish County Crawl Space

Jeff spent part of his day this week under a Snohomish County home handling a cracked ABS waste line repair that turned out to be a great example of a problem we see more often than people expect. The issue: a 3-inch ABS waste line had cracked right at the face of a fitting, and the pipe was in bad enough shape that a section came apart with almost no force at all.

What Caused This Cracked ABS Waste Line Repair

The homeowner didn't have an active clog or a flooded crawl space — just a slow, ongoing leak coming from where the pipe met one of the fittings. When Jeff got a look at the installation, the cause became pretty clear: the line had a slight back pitch, meaning it sloped the wrong way in that section. Instead of draining downhill like it's supposed to, that back grade put ongoing pressure and stress on the pipe.

ABS pipe is tough, but it's not built to handle years of that kind of stress at a joint. Eventually, the fitting face gave way and cracked. In this case, the damage was bad enough that a section of pipe came apart with almost no force at all — no saw, no hammer, just old material that had already failed on its own.

Repairing a Cracked ABS Waste Line

The repair came down to a few steps:

  • Reamed out the damaged fitting to clean up the connection point

  • Cut in a new piece of pipe to replace the cracked section

  • Installed a new coupling to tie it all back together

  • Adjusted the pitch of the line so it has proper fall going forward, instead of the back grade that caused the problem in the first place

That last step matters as much as the pipe replacement itself. If we'd just swapped the cracked section without correcting the pitch, the new pipe would eventually be fighting the same pressure and could fail again down the road. Fixing the pitch means the line drains the way it's supposed to, which takes the stress off the pipe for good.

Once everything was reconnected, Jeff ran water through the line to test it and confirmed there were no more leaks.

Signs You May Need a Drain Line Repair

Back-pitched or improperly sloped drain lines aren't always obvious from the surface. They don't usually cause a problem right away — it can take years of slow stress before a fitting finally cracks. If you've noticed a musty smell in your crawl space, a small water stain near a foundation wall, or just haven't had anyone look at your drain lines in a while, it's worth having a plumber take a look before a small crack turns into a bigger repair.

All of our repair work comes backed by a 6-month guarantee, and drain work specifically carries a 24-hour guarantee. No trip fees, and you'll always know the price upfront before we start.
